Albufeira is an interesting mix of history and modernity. Its name is said to come from the Arab "Al-Buhera" which means "Castle of the Sea" and contacts with other cultures has been a feature of Albufeira up to the modern day.
For those interested in local culture, the "Old Town" area is a must, with its narrow cobbled streets, historic churches and squares with many bars and restaurants.
"The Strip" attracts many of the younger visitors with its lively bars and light spots.
However, if you want to take advantage of the Algarve's climate, with over 3000 hours of sun a year, hot dry summers and mild winters, then there are many other atrractions in the area.
Although fishing boats can still be seen on the beach, the main occupants are the tourists and locals enjoying the sun, sand and the warm Mediterranean sea. On the local beaches all types of activities are available, including wetbikes, pedaloes,jetskis and parasailing.
The main beach in Albufeira is 'Praia dos Pescadores' or 'Fisherman's Beach', named after the local fishermen and their boats which used to be a feature of Albufeira in its earlier tourist days.
